Rounders is the gold standard when it comes to films about poker and now some of those involved with the original are hoping to see a sequel.
Released in 1998, the poker movie tells the story of Mike McDermott (Matt Damon) as he goes to law school, but also hits the underground poker scene. McDermott plays high stakes poker to help his friend Worm (Ed Norton) pay some heavy debts to loan sharks.
Appearances by John Malkovich and Gretchen Mol added to the star power, and Damon and Norton apparently wouldn’t mind seeing a poker sequel hitting screens.
Expanding on the Poker World
Rounders has become a cult favorite and is appreciated by poker players for the realism in how the game is presented. Damon recently appeared on the Rich Eisen Show and expressed interest in making the project a reality.
In the interview, Damon says he's spoken with screenwriters David Levien and Brian Koppelman, who wrote the original, about the possibility and how a sequel could look at the changes the game – including the explosion of online poker – has seen over the last two decades.
“The one we’ve been talking about for years, and we’re trying to, and I just saw Edward Norton a few weeks ago, like all of us want to do it is a second Rounders movie,” he said. “So much has happened in the poker world in the last 25 years, it would be fun to catch up with those guys.
“They had a whole movie ready to go then, but now there’s been a whole other change in the poker world since then, so I haven’t talked to them about what it would be, but I know … what they had 10 years ago was fantastic, and I’m sure they could augment and roll with the times and update it to where we are today and make something great.”
It remains to be seen if the project will happen, but plenty of poker fans hope it becomes a reality.
