As part of 888poker’s 20-year celebrations, we recently hosted Retro Week from March 20-27. The series included 26 tournaments from the past, boasting a total guarantee of over $888,000!
When all was said and done, 15,844 combined entrants participated. The series awarded $981,256 in prize money overall.
Players from the United Kingdom performed the best claiming four titles. The UK was followed by three each for both Romania and Lithuania. Germany, Malta, Sweden, and Mexico each accounted for two titles each, while Montenegro, Canada, Denmark, Thailand, and Brazil each had one.
Here’s a look at some highlights from Retro Week.
Retro Week Kicks Off with Big Sunday Action
On Sunday, March 20, Retro Week kicked off with four tournaments. In the first – the $33 buy-in Event #1: $25,000 Big Fish – 846 players rebought 311 times. The 1,157-entry field resulted in a $34,710 prize pool. Brazil’s “E.D.I.T.H” came out on top of that tournament for $5,373.88.
In the $90 buy-in Event #2: $100,000 Sunday Challenge, 1,011 players rebought 352 times. The 1,363-entry field generated a $111,766 prize pool that paid out the top 180 finishers.
Among those to make deep runs were the following players –
- “Likat” (40th - $335.29)
- “kansaspoker” (21st - $525.30)
- “BlacKK_DucKK” (13th - $927.65)
- Nicolas "PKaiser" Fierro (9th - $1,542.37)
- “li1li1” (3rd - $8,773.63)
In the end, Romania’s “liviu_hzn” downed Azerbaijan’s “Agharazi” in heads-up play. They walked away with the title and $16,330 in prize money.

In the $16.50 buy-in Event #3: $15,000 Catfish, 762 players rebought 199 times. Thailand’s “penfolds6” emerged victorious to the tune of $14,414.40.
Finally, the $525 buy-in Event #4: $50,000 Whale had 97 players rebuy 20 times to offer up a $58,500 prize pool to the top 18 finishers. These included –
- “p000cket000” (16th place - $1,111.50)
- Robin “Inho” Ylitalo (10th place - $1,170)
- Niklas “tutten7” Åstedt (6th place - $2,679.30).
After the United Kingdom’s “nlfreddie” bowed out in third place for $7,347.60, the title came down to 888poker regular “kiskutya23” and Finland’s “wellyxx”.
Six hours and 18 minutes of play later, the former came out on top to win the title for $14,414.40.

Malta’s “omgLUNAAA” Wins $300K Main Event
The cornerstone tournament on the schedule was the two-day, $215 buy-in Event #24: $300,000 Mega Deep Main Event. It saw 1,245 players rebuy 242 times, with the top 240 finishers from the 1,487-entry field making the money.
Among those to make relatively deep runs were the following players –
- Niklas “tutten7” Åstedt (87th place for $630)
- “JohanSchultz” (64th place for $690)
- “kiskutya23” (51st place for $720)
- “kevlar1991” (29th place for $1,080)
- “Why_a_King” (17th place for $1,740)

On Monday, March 28, the final table of nine players returned to play down to a winner. Malta’s “omgLUNAAA” defeated Canada’s “Gaby2008” in heads-up play. They took home a hefty $41,430 for their first-place performance.

Dominik Nitsche Runner-Up in Series Ending Whale
The final tournament of the series was the $525 buy-in Event #26: $50,000 Whale. It saw 83 players rebuy 19 times to create a $51,000 prize pool that paid the top 15 finishers. Some of those to cash but fall short of the final table were the following players –
- “Sparse1999” (15th place for $1,147.50)
- “IHaveNoBoss” (12th place for $1,198.50)
- “alexos888” (10th place for $1,198.50)
Dominik Nitsche made a deep run in the tournament but came up one spot shy of winning a Retro Week title. After 6 hours and 17 minutes of play, he fell in second place for $9,180 to “FoldestJaEh”, who won the tournament for $14,050.50.
